Another year older, fun to be had, ect.

So as I celebrate the last ten minutes of my 22nd birthday, I wanted to thank everyone for there nice words and kind gestures. They were quite appreciated.
I ended up going to Cheesecake Factory, and got a ton of good food! Ended up ordering the Miso Salmon, which was so good it made me weak in the knees. I ended up getting some very needed clothes and a video game system from my parents, and a beautiful song and more clothes from my girlfriend. I also spend a good amount of the day with some of my peeps. So to sum up, I had a very pleasant day.

On a sad note, I was quickly eliminated from Act it, which was well deserved from a bad performance on my part. It's sucks a bit, because I never got the chance to really act well in the competition, and I hate to leave something unless I tried my best. Alas, I guess it wasn't meant to be this season.

I guess I have to prove to others and especially to myself that I can voice act worth a damn, because I am starting to have some doubts about myself.

Act It! round 2

Haven't been updating this season yet...

Round 1 was demos, and I was very excited, as a sizable portion of my flist is participating. In Round 2, I got to work with [info]merodi_no_yami on an original scene by Tregatry, which is her own re-imagining of Peter Pan. I played a pyschiatrist (who is supposed to be Mr. Darling) and she played my patient, who is supposed to be Wendy, driving insane by the apparent deaths of her brothers.

We both made it through the round and will be cast "inappropriately" in the next round. For example, until he decided that the script was too short, Dylan had me playing the role of Kat from 10 Things I Hate About You. Gender-bending is going to be big next week.

Sadly, a number of very talented VAs did not make it through this round, much to my surprise and that of some of the other top finishers from last season, who were listening to the episode last night with me. I hope that they at least enjoyed their participation and will be back next season, having learned from it.

Sing It! (rounds nine and ten)

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 9:22 AM
OK, missed an update.

Round nine was Backstreet Boys. I sang Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely and tried really hard to sing in a lighter voice, but still got slammed for being too "show-tunesy" and not having enough swagger. Have I mentioned that I don't know their music or style? At least I passed through, fifth best out of seven.

Round ten was Bon Jovi. I sang Always, which I took down a fourth. This time, I did manage to change my vocal style to be a lot closer to the rock feel, but the second judge slammed me again for vibrato in my voice. Um... vibrato is something that comes normally from supporting a tone and singing with a relaxed throat. It is not a style choice. Mine is more noticeable because I am a baritone, but seriously. The biggest comments aside from that were that I was under-enunciating in some places and over-enunciating elsewhere. Le sigh. But I passed through again, fourth best out of six.

Next week is kind of interesting: two songs, one of which we pick from any genre, and one that Dylan has assigned us. I have been assigned Luck Be a Lady, from Guys and Dolls, which is not exactly the most full-voiced of songs, but is at least Broadway. The second choice will be interesting. Do I deliberately try a pop song (I'm thinking Richie Sambura's The Answer) to offer a variety? Or a Broadway song, since that is my strength? And if so, which one?

I am leaning heavily towards Broadway, and maybe a fuller, more dramatic song for contrast. Some obvious options might be Were Thine That Special Face or Where is the Life That Late I Led? from Kiss Me Kate. A bolder choice might be Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, since it is kind of high.

But I am also contemplating a couple of really longshot bold options: singing both parts of Confrontation (I have checked and they are both in my range), or finding a good english translation - and a backing track - for an aria. Some years ago, a friend of mine did an absolutely brilliant translation of Non Piu Andrai, but I don't see it online anymore. If I were certain I could pull these off, I would probably go that way.
